History of Soroptimist’s BCA Mammogram Fund Luncheon
Soroptimist’s first Breast Cancer Awareness event in Redding was held in October 1998,with a symposium that included informational booths where local doctors distributed information about breast cancer and the importance of early detection through mammogram screening. This event was sponsored by Soroptimist International (SI) of Shasta-Cascade. The following year, the event developed into a speaker’s luncheon to raise revenue for the Mammogram Fund. In 2003, SI Shasta Cascade merged with SI Redding and the annual event was continued under it’s umbrella to the present day.
Initially, the Breast Cancer Detection Fund targeted women 40 years and older who lacked insurance and could not afford the breast cancer screening. The program has since expanded to include other breast cancer detection services and is available to women and men with no age restriction.
From October 2003 to July 2014, Soroptimist has given 628 certificates for mammograms.
From 2008 to March 2014, SI Redding has contributed $49,000.00 from it’s Mammogram Fund.
